Throughout the other seasons life can take a lower profile blending into the background. Situations handled now require the passive approach. A firm hand, a steady nerve and plenty of empathy are the best counsel. The sword of power was forged only be used in defence.
The Holly's timber is hard and tough but able to bend so it was used for chariot wheels, also cugdels , walking sticks and smaller items like chess pieces. Cattle loved to eat the leaves, especially when other foliage was sparse. Medicines produced from the plant were used for rhuematism and to stem bleeding.
This tree is evocative of the Yule tide. The wreaths of the foliage and berries were originally employed to ward off evil spirits. A sign of constancy and strength whilst the rest of the forest sleeps.
