Hazel – Wisdom

A tree of the coppiced woodland the thin hazel branches were as adaplable as they were flexible. The walls of wattle and daub houses, fencing and basket weaving were some of the more credible artefacts. As a good tool for divining water and ore, etc., it was some what abused as a Medieval lie detector by the village judicary.

The Hazel is the tree in Celtic mythology that gives the gift of wisdom. It is also the ninth tree of the Ogham which symbolises gestation. Tales of sacred groves of Hazel trees, gifts of language and cauldron legends are all linked to this plant.
