Elm – Tranquillity
The magical and creative energy of this plant is to manifest physical form out of chaos. So it is a great time to acquire a new skill or to form a project which will benefit others. It also implies service to others without being subservient. There is confidence and maturity to be found in still places and strong connections to nature and wildlife. It also suggests new experiences and discovery but in a quiet and dignified setting.
The Elm was also known as the Mast tree because it was often used in ship building. A strong timber elm can be utilised for most forms of carpentry. The sadnees is that the population of the Elm's in Britain dwindled in the last century, but they are being replaced and conserved.
The Elm is a tree of the Underworld; it is also a tree connected in Teutonic legend to the birth of the first female. So perhaps the souls of women were created below! Wherever it was, the Elm is symbolic of the feminine intelligence. It is not the virginal, like the Birch it is the manifest of the mature feminine nature.
