The Dogwood gained it's name in England because the wood made good skewers, pegs, stakes, spears and butchers dogs. It was also used as a treatment for the mange a disease usaully associated with dogs. The berries produced a lamp oil which gave it the name it otherwise commonly known as , The Wax tree.

This plant looks at its best when it is stripped bare, it shows the vitality of the plant. In mythology it is linked with male vitality and blood lust, but because the bark is only exposed in the darker period of the year it is also associated with matters of the occult.
