The Sweet Chestnut was brought to Britain by the Romans. The timber is strong but it splits to easily, which is why it was not widely used for funiture. The powedered nut was used as a medicine for chest complaints. Chestnuts were avaluable staple in the store cupboard.

The Chestnut was seen as a provider of wisdom in mythology. A wisdom that could be acquired through practical experience. As a soft nut the the gift it represents in mythlogy is accessable to the ordinary man.
