The ancient woodland holds a special magic and mystery for all of us. In ancient times for man, it was the equivalent of the local DIY store. It provided him with tools, medicine, food, shelter and warmth. The knowledge he gained of the plants was passed from generation to generation. This information then became hidden in tales and symbolic languages, the qualities of each shrub defining their mystical characters. This ethereal definition is then displayed in the mythologies, folklore and superstitions of the European and Asiatic cultures. In the British Isles it became evident through the beliefs and customs that were practised by the pagan cultures of the Celtic tribes and their local predecessors the Ancient Britons.

Tree Divination is the art of divination using the symbolic shrubs as the tool. Based on the Tree Oghams and using other shrubs of the time in a form of forecasting. The Oghams can still be seen as the Tree Alphabet which are the original characters of the Brythonic and the Goidelic languages, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, etc. A set of stones or woods can be used for castings in divination; these are the Tree Casts. The meanings relate directly to the holistic usage of each plant.
